A different touch

Hi friends! I want to show you Selena Wagner's photographs today. As we have said on other occasions, the same object can be portrayed in many different ways and this depends on the artist's vision. We can see many versions of famous monuments or emblematic sites, but only a few can show a different point of view. This is what happens with Selena's, she shows us a different and personal version highlighting the symbolic characteristic of the composition. Although the composition itself is extremely important, in this case we find certain elements that make the difference, sometimes because of its symbolic meaning, in others because of its aesthetics in combination of visual lines and because of having found the artist an out of place element that shows a different result than normally expected.

The best conclusion we can draw is that Selena has her own style, a style that comes to us through her own vision of the world and her great ability to rescue the symbology either through elements, shapes or lights. Light and Beauty

Today, I want to show you  Joseph Kelly's artworks. Photography about nature is one of his main lines (but not the only one), nevertheless this artist is more interested in what a capture transmits or moves than in the forms themselves. 

Each photographer shows the world from his/her own eyes, so it is extremely interesting to know that external vision, from another perspective, that maybe we ourselves would not be able to see. In his works, Joseph shows us a world of color and light, perhaps as a representation of his interior through the external objects he captures. Beauty is the common denominator of his works, which, although at some point they have a touch of drama, this only highlights the beautiful.

When elegance is present in all its forms

Hi friends! It's a pleasure for me to show you Scott Kemper's photographs today. On many occasions, when I write about an artist, it isn't difficult to choose some of the works to show them here, but this time it has been really difficult to choose. The first sensation I had when I looked at Scott's galleries  was that of wishing to be in the places he portrays.

The images he captures, all without exception, take us to the right place with elegance and simplicity of the shapes. The elegance is detached in each of his works creating a perfect balance for the eye. The balance of the composition is subjugating, and the simplicity I mention is that which avoids recharged elements and leaves, simply, those most important ones, which really mean something relevant and that, somehow, being the only ones existing inevitably lead us to place with which we identify those parameters.

This artist plays with one or more elements, all important for what he wants to express, as if he had placed them there on purpose. We all know the icons' (and landmarks) importance, those which our mind knows and identifies with a particular place or situation. In his photographs Scott recreates this icons in an exceptional way and with sublime elegance, there is no noise or confusion that disturbs or distracts the viewer, in his photographs there is only what must exist.

On the other hand, the choice of colors is exceptional (remember that they are photographs and not paintings, so you have to get those colors that exist in reality). We all know the importance of colors as well, as each of them tells us something special and takes us to a different feeling. Well, there is no mistake in the colors, there is not a single color that leads to errors and makes us feel something different from what the artist has intended. As if we could imagine something and turn it into reality, Scott Kemper that sensation transmits in his photos.

Find your style in photography - 7 - Luck or creativity?

Today I want to talk about Alan Brown's photographs which could teach us a lot about how to create good images. He seems to find beauty everywhere, do you think that he's a lucky guy or that he is a talented one? You know, sometimes one is lucky enough as to live in a paradise and have the opportunity to take good photographs, but if you think this you're wrong. You don't need to live in a wonderful place to make good photos and nothing assures that you would make them so.

Of course, Alan's photographs show us wonderful places but that's not all, he captures a special moment with a special distribution of elements and a special perspective among other details that make the image different from all that could have been taken in the same place. As he tells us in his bio: "I learnt quickly from the harsh critique of contest judges that great images are not taken, they are created, and that each image has its own story . This mantra has been a constant throughout my many years as an avid photographer." 

In the same sense, he's driven to create exceptional images, he's self demanding what leads him to produce excellent works. So, we can learn two different lessons through his work, the first one is that it isn't the same taking a photograph than creating one and the second is that if you don't have the strength to exceed the average expectations about a photograph your work will be very similar to everyone.

Find your style in photography - 6 - Make the Viewer to be There

Following with photography styles, as we have already commented, it's very important to find your own syle as a photographer, it isn't just a painters issue, as a proffesional you have to leave your mark on each of your photographs so that whoever sees them knows that image was captured through your camera and your eyes. 

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of styles with small differences between them. But, what is it that makes a photograph not only have its author personal impression but reach the viewer? Well, one of the answers would be to make the viewer like being in that place, convert the photo from a piece of paper to a trip, make feel the sensations and emotions that we ourselves have when capturing an image. It's difficult, isn't it?

First of all, we can't transmit an emotion that we don't have. If we go around with our camera and just shoot what we think it's nice to choose a good one later we can get some good pictures. But, if we go for what we want or if we go around and find exactly what we need, if we enter into communication with the environment and with what we want to portray, for example: an animal, if we get really involved with what we are capturing, then we get great photographs. However, even though I believe that this way of working can be learned, personally I consider it requires an innate personal condition of the photographer. We can all learn about everything, much more if we strive, but we also have personal skills that lead us to be better in one area or another. 

We have Carter Spade's works as an example of this. You feel close to the image as if you were there and as if you could touch it. As he says: "I want the viewer to feel the connection to the animal or place that I felt at the time that sparked me to take that photo. I try to find an angle that makes the viewers feel like they are seeing it for themselves.", and he always gets it. He's an animal lover (even his work is not limited to that), and we can really feel that those eyes on the image are watching us, and we can feel that connection of which he speaks about as if we were there. Therefore, although the technical and specific issues of photography are very important, not least is to convey feelings to the viewer. Find your style in photography - 4 - When Everything can be Beautiful

Hello friends! Let's continue with photography and talk about a different style.

Maybe you go around with your camera for hours looking for something worth to be captured, you get tired, you find think there's nothing and get stressed. Have you thought that, perhaps, you've not been paying real attention? Beauty is around us everywhere, the matter is that we have to see it with different eyes. Everyone knows that a flower, a puppy or a sunset is beautiful, but there are many other things that deserve our attention and that are beautiful for other reasons than simply visual.

Things tell us stories, everything you find in your way has something to say, an old building, an abandoned church, even old tools tell us about themselves. But, how do we make other people listen and find the beauty? Well, that's called "art". Art makes things talk by themselves and tell us their story, it gives real beauty even to a piece of wood, so sometimes it's not just about what we capture but how. 

There is something called perspective that we should take into account and which can bring a melancholic, sad, happy, romantic, etc. touch to our shots. Let's imagine an abandoned and ancient building, we have many ways to capture it and depending on that we'll get a result: time of the day, light, from where, close, far, perspective, clouded day, sunny day, among other possibilities. The matter is that we can find beauty wherever we go if we have a good eye, a good technique and artistic sense.

There some photographers who are special for that, they exactly know where, when and how. They don't need a beautiful thing itself to show beauty, they find and show it wherever they go and on whatever they capture. This is Lisa Wooten case, her shots capture beauty as she perfectly knows it is everywhere, and even when she is mostly a landscape photographer she gives us the fresh air of beauty, feelings and emotion on everything she captures. Find your style in photography - 3 - The Axis that Captures the Attention

Following the "Find your style in photography" issue, I want to talk about the importance of the axis (or point) that captures the viewer attention.

Some photographers have good works, but have a problem since they can't drive the viewer attention to a specific point in their composition. This is important both in fotography and in painting since if we don't get a certain balance the eye is lost in the set. I think I've talked a little bit about it before. No matter how beautiful a landscape may be, it can go unnoticed if we fail to create the imaginary lines that will take us to the spotlight. Sometimes it's an element (a boat, a tree, etc.), while sometimes it is simply where the horizon, buildings, a mountain or clouds intersect.

Generally, it is that balance and that point of attention which makes a good photo stand out over another. The eye needs to get out of the confusion, have a stimulus that takes it and direct it towards a point (not necessarily in the center) to appreciate the rest of the work. This phenomenon occurs in fractions of a second and it's not at the conscious level. Therefore, pay attention to balance / distraction, many times what could have been a fantastic capture becomes a common one for neglecting this.

As an example of this, I want to show you John Janicki's photographs, he's an incredible professional photographer and we can perfectly see what I'm talking about. He has a perfect sense of balance and  has the ability to take the viewer's eye exactly where he wants. Find your style in photography - 2 - Beyond Perfection

Some photographers show us reality in such an exquisite way that they make us wish things were like they show us. It is an elaborate hyperrealism that provides an added touch of beauty, which comes from their own eye and camera.

Let's see what are the most distinctive features of this type of work, regardless of the special talent of each artist:

1. The right moment: not any moment, just the perfect one.

2. The light that inspires exactly what we want it to: depending on the light we'll get different kind of emotions, sometimes we just find the proper moment for shooting while others we look for that.

3. Perfect element's combination: we have different elements or just one but, how and where do we place them? We'll get completely different results depending on the combination.

4. Perfect balance: balance is one of the most important things in photography, that makes the eye go in one direction or another,  gives relevance to the total composition or to certain elements and may change the general meaning.

5. Capture exactly what you want to capture: when we work outdoors it's possible that we capture what we can, but patient and an experienced eye take us where we and how we want. 

These simple tips usually make the difference between a simple landscape or a paradise one. Have you ever seen a photograph of an incredible place you've visited once but that appears to be more exciting and beautiful than what you've seen with your own eyes?, that's called "talent".

Find your style in photography - 1 - As gentle as a cool breeze in summer

We all know that there are so many styles of photographies as photographers, but the matter is: did you find your own style? as in painting, it will make you stand out from the others. 

Art often reflects not only what we see but what we are, not only by the elements that we show but how we do it. Through our camera we can get the same scene transmit different sensations depending on how we capture the image. Besides, we have post production tools which help us to get what we really want. But it isn't so easy as we think. Some say that if they had a good camera and photopshop they could get anything they want, but that's wrong..., we can't get it if we have no talent. You can spend endless hours in front of your computer without achieving what you want as it's not just a matter of working with technology but, as usual in art, to know how to do it and what we exactly want to get.

I want to show you Leif Sohlman's artworks as an example of this, he is a photographer mainly working with nature photography such as birds, animals and landscapes. He has a personal style, not only because he's mostly focused on nature but on the way he captures it. Sometimes it's difficult to know if his works are photographs or paintings since he adds his personal touch which brings us to an emotion that goes beyond the image itself. It's like a cool and gentle breeze in a special universe of nature where a peaceful environment takes us to pleasant sensations, even when it's sometimes broken by some details as a dramatic sky it simply reinforces the peaceful scene below.

His special mood on pictures makes us distinguish his ones among others. Leif is a perfect combination between great eye and great hand, he subsumes the right place and the perfect smooth that increases reality making it become magic. The hidden side of reality

There are many ways to show reality since it's not alway bright and coloured and artists know much about this. When it comes about photographs things get very interesting as they have to capture that secret and inner message that keeps hidden in the elements that are portrayed. Looking at a picture we realize about a reality which sometimes it's not the one that we could assume in advance, there many details that tell us a lot about a story and that play a symbolic rol. Of course, we have to pay attention and be opened minded enough to go beyond a simple element. 

It's amazing, for example, how just a leaf can tell us about a hard season allowing us to imagine all that exists around it, a dense forest, a gray and empty city, a failed romance, a path which no one treads, or whatever your imagination and emotions let you go. There is the magic of such photographs, those that with a couple of simple elements make us travel to ourselves, our experience and imagination. There is clearly seen the good eye of a good photographer.

Motion and Emotion

In recent decades the photograph emerged as a real artistic expression. New technologies and the ability to access different areas that we were previously restricted help on this, but it isn't so easy. It's not just arrive and shot, as I told several times in this blog, there are lot conditions to make art from a capture.

Personally, one of the photographic styles that I attracts my attention is the one that manages to capture scenes in motion and much more if those things are not around me daily.

We all have a relatively limited life, we can't be in different places at the same time, and we only have access to certain situations, also our eye usually lose that glorious moment that can only be captured by a camera and the eye of a good photographer. How often have we been in front of a herd of horses running, or facing a spectacular fall, or at a funny situation that we miss details? That's where photography within its wide variety of styles, occupies a prominent place to our satisfaction.

The eye of a talented photographer with a camera can show us sites that we'll never visit and stop those moments that otherwise might be unnoticed. But it's that second, less than a second in fact, that makes us feel as if we were there and give us the idea of a whole situations with just a 'shot'.
Motion makes us feel emotions, it tells us a story.

When Art Makes Magic Come True

There are some artists who just tell us about real world, others tell us about their feeling and there others that show us their inner magical world.

In a way, all artists show their inner world even if they paint a landscape since they show us the way they see it. But it's not that simple. As humans we have a personal world that goes beyond other people understanding, no matter how much we try to explain it we can't do that with words, it's really difficult at least. It gets harder if that inner world is full of magic, as Michele Avanti's one, whose creativity seems to come from the depths of her soul. She works with traditional mediums as acrylic but also with photographs and digital art.

Seeing her work we can't help but notice the details, each of them is important for the interpretation and each element is placed to tell us something. Her wise use of color added to the subject and the composition as a whole takes us to a magical world of fantasy, a world that the artist make us possible to almost touch it with our own hands.

Outdoors Beauty

Back to photography, there is so much to say about this even when the basics can be found on any site today. As we know there are many kind of photographers, some work in a studio taking care of each detail and element of their composition as they want to show an accurate idea of what they have in their own mind, others make photographs and then digitally produced them either by taking only some of the elements or the composition as a whole, and others go out to look for beauty in order to capture it with their camera. Any of these styles is valid and can have an amazing final result.

When we go looking for the beauty of the environment we must be flexibe and be aware of what we have in front and that will change from a moment to another because of the light, wind or movement of what we want to capture. What do we must consider when capturing images outdoors?

- be patient, things are not waiting for us but we have to wait for them. For example, there is a special moment to capture a sunset and if you are not patient enough you could miss the special second that makes it magic.
- be creative, you can find a new way to capture what you want. Let's think that you wanted to capture an animal roaring, you imagined it with the animal in a particular position, its head leaned with wild eyes..., but that's not possible and you get tired of waiting, perhaps you should change your own position and think in another approach.
- be perseverant, if not today, tomorrow or next month we'll achieve what we want to capture. We all wanted to take that lovely scene of a mother with her cubs, but you arrive there and the mother is gone or the cubs are not close enough, anything can happen, don't get dissapointed just wait or come back later.
- be reasonable, and aware of how reasonable it can become your idea. We may have an idea too far from reality, we get stressed and start to doubt about about our ability, remember that sometimes we can't find what we want just because it's not the right place or the right way. Evaluate your purposes.
- have thousand eyes and take into account the eye of the camera sees different to yours.

More than canvas

There are some artists who don't just reveal their imagination in their paintings but on the material they use as well. 

There are more materials to use beside canvas and paper such as wood, boards and metal among others. A material that an artist uses to paint on shows what he/she wants to say since it has its own characteristics that go beyond a simple way of presentation telling us about the inner meaning of the artwork.

We should all try to experiment with this as if we were playing trying to bring out even more of our creativity.

Today, I want to introduce you Abelone Petersen's work. She's an artist who works with different materials as she says in her biography: "I create many subjects and designs with a variety of mediums. The most exciting to me are the three dimensional paintings I create on the stones I find riding my Spirit pony here in BC Canada. The earth created these 'sculptures' long, long ago. This brings a spiritual realm to my work, a connectedness to all life. It is here I feel the closest to 3D design principles of sculpture combined with colour theory to bring forth the illusion of my vision within the stone."

When photografic art speaks of our inner world

Today I want to show you the work of an artist that exceeds normal expectations regarding photography. She is Juli Scalzi and it's difficult to define her. She is not just a photographer, she goes far beyond giving the images the ability to transmit more than a simple figure or a landscape in the composition.

She takes some elements, as does a painter, and she gathers them to express a very precise idea or feeling. The first time I saw her artworks I thought that they were paintings, and I was not so far from reality since she uses the images taken with her camera in the same way. Such works can only be done with great creativity and talent, they make you think and it's unavoidable to feel emotions at watching them. Her works also have a certain innocence, the ability to take normal elements and convert them into compositions full of symbolism.

The magic pencil

Some painters have problems to determine the best medium to use in order to show what they want to express and capture in their works. There is just something that I feel completely sure about and it's that it doesn't exist the best medium. The best medium is the one that makes us feel better with our final work and the one that makes us enjoy all the procedure. 

On the other hand, some times artists complain too much about not having the perfect materials. I could be the best example for this, I'm always complaining about the paper or canvas quality, about brushes and about all other kind of materials perfection..., and that's why when I see some people artworks I arrive to the conclusion that sometimes we lose sight of creativity in terms of materials.

A good artist is able to create amazing works simply with a pencil and paper, and when I say it's just simply I don't mean that it's easy , but that we should just only need those materials.

There are some great artists who perform their work with pen and paper and they are able to show the details and magnificence of a complex work done with other sophisticated materials. 

Paper and pencil, that's all, plus talent and creativity.

Her works have a striking and powerful detailed realism while adopting a contemporary fresh air that renews the idea of what we consider a portrait.
